As hand pockets? Not on the DR2 design. Here's a shot of my Won Hundred DR with awesome hand warmer pockets. Compared to the A-2, which is super awkward. Having useless pockets is just bad design. Depends on what you mean by "useful" though. I use pants pockets or the interior pockets to hold things, while I prefer slash pockets on the outside of jackets for my hands. In this sense, I don't think it's that difficult to make the pockets on the A-2 bigger and moved slightly towards the zipper. Like an inch at most would have made a huge difference without ruining the proportions on the jacket.
Either way, saying the bad pockets are about the garments these jackets are based on and the history behind the designs or whatever is plain stupid/bullshit. Further, since I have a hilariously similar jacket to the DR2 with wonderful, easy to use, deep slash pockets, I'm not convinced by your vague hand-wavy argument about "length and orientation".
